MASTER AN EFFECTIVE FIRST IMPRESSION
ARE YOU MASTERING ALL FOUR CHARACTERS IN WHAT YOU ‘WEAR’? LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AND BREAK IT DOWN… You are what you WEAR and You become what you WEAR:
W Web presence – your digital footprint
E Ethics – your conduct
A Appearance – your image
R Reveal – your communication
Let’s start with the W: Are you consistent in how you project yourself to others in person, on paper and very importantly via the web? What is your active digital footprint?
An active digital footprint is what you deliberately share about yourself in websites, social media platforms, blogs and forums. Be aware of your active digital footprint and manage contributions carefully and sensibly.
Make sure that your profiles are accurate and up to date. Your interests, experiences, competences and whom you are connected to, say a lot about yourself. Be careful about which photos you post, what you like and which groups you join. If you are an entrepreneur build a website, otherwise you risk to loose business.
Search yourself on Google and see what comes up. Think before you post.
Second comes the E: What about your ethics? Are you risking your reputation?
Good ethics could be assessed, among others, through your reliability, because you prove that others can trust you, you are disciplined and keep your word. By your dedication, since you are enthusiastic and resilient. As a result of your cooperation, whilst you gladly work with others and respect others. For putting high worth in quality and giving your very best. Because of your strong moral principles and honesty.
Take stress or failure as a learning experience. You are evolving!
Next, let’s look at A: What about your Appearance? Which image are you leaving in the mind of others?
Your second skin, your clothes and the way you groom yourself speak for you and they
speak loud every day of your life. Your appearance makes the first and longest lasting impression about who you are. Therefore, wearing cuts that best suit your body shape and choosing the right colors is vital in helping you look and feel amazing. Nevertheless, you should aim in harmonizing your clothing with your authentic self AND with your profession.
Analyse your wardrobe. Dress for success!
And last but not least, R: What do you Reveal? What do you say and what about your body language?
Try to reveal what you mean through the three Vs of communication. That is verbal, vocal and visual communication. Adapt your vocabulary to the audience, minimize the use of fillers such as “um or you know”, avoid profanity or slang and make an effort to use “I” messages. Match your voice volume, rate and pitch to your message and add enthusiasm. Increase interest in keeping eye contact and beware of your proximity, facial expressions, gestures and posture.
Practice makes perfect. Smile!
